Either this is a strong buy or a strong sell. Maybe the bulls are right on this; but I just can't get comfortable with (1) paying big dividends and simultaneously raising capital through issuing stock and (2) earnings driven by valuations determined by management. This could be a great stock but it is based on a model which can be badly abused. Because I cannot get comfortable with it, it is a strong sell for me. If you really understand it and like it, I wish you well--there are many things to like about it. Either Warren Buffett or Peter Lynch said something to the effect that the stock market is great for the small investor as long as he invests in the same way that a baseball player would play if there were no called strikes--just wait for a really fat one. Maybe this is a fat one; but I think it could be a curve and will wait for another fat one. If I ever overcome my stated objections, this could easily become a strong buy.

BelowBookValue"s recitation of the facts is accurate; but at its current p/e ratio, its a hold for my portfolio and a weak buy for a portfolio looking for good dividend income. You could get lucky and make some good money if it is bought by an MHC, does a second step conversion or actually starts making a decent earnings per share.

I reiterate my hold rating. Everything ElevenWall says is true but the likelihood of anything positive happening soon is not great. A potential 50% pop is not very attractive if the likelihood of a second step or remute soon is not great. As for buying in the hope that a second step will go at 110% of book, that borders on the greater fool theory. In order for this one to become a buy, it needs to demonstrate to me an ability to make money. They have invested a lot in branch expansion. It remains to be seen whether that was a brilliant investment in building their franchise or just a waste of their capital. I keep watching and will shift to buy mode if they start making money. My prior comments were:

I reiterate my hold rating. Elevenwall and others have articulated (1) the reasons why you can make some money if there is a remutualization or a second step and (2) that the company has not demonstrated an ability to make a meaningful profit. I have no idea haw anyone can rate this a buy unless they have some reason to expect a remutualization, a second step or a breakthrough in profits soon.

This one has dropped back into strong buy territory. The fundamental argument about Freddie Mac stock and dividend waivers remains intact. The price just does not reflect those fundamentals. Plus you get a good dividend while you wait.

Drop from a strong buy to a buy/hold based on appreciation and receipt of the special dividend. The dividend waiver is still a powerful value creator for this mhc. The construction of an automobile plant in their county gives them an opportunity to grow the business while they milk the Freddie Mac stock portfolio they own. I am holding but am not adding to my positions.

If you have a long term horizon and are not worried about liquidity, CHFN is back in the BUY category. Just put it away, collect your regular and special dividends and forget about it. I already own a slug of this and am not adding; because I do believe in diversification. The dividend waiver is still a powerful value creator for this mhc. The construction of an automobile plant in their county gives them an opportunity to grow the business while they milk the Freddie Mac stock portfolio they own. I believe in rooting for the Johnsons to get filthy rich as long as they take me along for the ride.

This one looks mighty cheap and mighty tempting. The risk, of course, is that the recent personnel changes and the investigations might indicate a substantial problem that has not been brought to light yet. I prefer to buy FRE by buying CHFN and not buying FRE directly. Buying out of favor stocks is a good approach to making money--you just have to live with the fact that a few of those out of favor stocks were out of favor for a good reason.

Jewelry store with low p/e, high growth, insider buying, trading at about liquidation value. The risks are a complicated relationship to another jeweler and a lawsuit brought by factor who claims that many of the big jewelry store chains misled the factor concerning the financial condition of a supplier. With the caveat that the company paid for the research report by J. M. Dutton, the Dutton report available on its website does a good job of explaining the situation. Unless there is something rotten going on, this is cheap, cheap, cheap. I bought some around 11. It went to 15 and is back around 12. I plan to buy more. I give up. I got this one wrong. I previously said. If any of you have some insights into this company or the jewelry business in general, I would like to hear about them especially if I am missing something.

CHEAP. Just look at the pe ratio and tell me whether you would rather own this well run company which makes quality cars and is increasing market share or whether you would rather own a US or European car company that seems to be in business primarily to pay for their underfunded pension plans and unfunded retiree medical liabilities.

Actually my rating is buy/hold. This is a sleepy S & L that wants to act like its still a mutual. Its biggest attraction is the dividend. At some point (not anytime soon) there will be a bonanza when they do a second step or remutualize. I would not look for them to start trying to run this to significantly increase earnings or realize the value any time soon.

It sure looks cheap but I get real worried when you are relying on the states to keep it going; because the states have a stak in its survival (to pay everything it owes the states over the next 20 years) and then the states start selling bonds backed by the tobacco settlement payments; and maybe the states don't care so much whether the tobacco companies survive.

I changed my rating to hold based on valuation. I own some and plan to keep it but it is not cheap enough now for me to buy more. My comments on my previous ratings were:

No longer a strong buy due to price appreciation. Now a buy/hold. My previous comments when I thought it was a strong buy at 12 1/2 were as follows:

Very cheap mhc on book and earnings using only public shares. If you are patient and a long term holder, liquidity should not matter much. Stay away if liquidity is important to you.

I have looked at this again and raised to a strong buy. This is a premier growth company in the pharmaceutical field. Its price has risen is the last few months but it is still very cheap low p/e by growth stock standards. I have bought some and continue to add to my position. I ran a screen on stocks that would be liked by both Benjamin Graham and Peter Lynch--up popped several stocks. A little digging eliminated most of them. The one of those remaining which looked most promising was SKFR--a Swedish company in the bearing and sealing business which has made and continues to increase investments in Eastern Europe. I think that there are good opportunities in Eastern Europe and prefer to have businessmen making those investments for me rather than portfolio managers. The most recent earnings report was not great but was not bad. At 11x earnings and a decent dividend, it seems a cheap play on a worldwide economic recovery. I bought today at $29.16. If anyone else has insights on this one, I would sure like to hear them.

Based on price appreciation a BUY but no longer a STRONG BUY. Previously I stated:

With the caveat that I already own as full a position as I am comfortable holding and will not personally be adding to it, TFSL under $12 seems like a real bargain for anyone who does not already own as much as they are comfortable holding in a single position. I think that the large allocations are artificially holding down the pop; because conversion investors got a great deal more stock than they are comfortable holding in a single position and are selling or at least nor buying more.

I have been buying Tortoise Capital (TTO) at recent prices. It is a closed end fund investing in micro-cap and private equity investments in the pipeline business trading at a substantial discount to its May 31, 2009 NAV. Its related funds (TYY, TYG, TYN and TYG) trade a a small discount or even a premium to NAV. Even with a dramatic reduction in the dividend, the dividend for TTO is almost 9% and is mostly tax free. The issue/risk is leverage and ongoing discussions with their lenders. I like the cash flows in the pipeline business and own KMP, EPE MGG. This gives me exposure to the smaller players at a discount.

Hold for the dividend. At $7.45 TTO still trades for a significant discount to the NAV but is no longer cheap enough for a strong buy. I still like the pipeline industry but the market is catching up on valuations. When I previously rated TTO as a strong buy I said--

At $6.45, TTO is back in the strong buy area. The recent slash in the dividend and write down of net asset values is baked into the price. Trades at a substantial discount to net asset value. This is not for the faint of heart.

I am not greedy. TTO has had a nice run. It is a solid hold based on discount to nav and the dividend but is no longer a strong buy. The recent sale of their large holding in International Resources Partners gives them a lot of cash to reinvest and tends to validate the valuation that they have put on their closely held investments.

I have liked this one for a long time. It is well run with great efficiency ratio and ROA. It is located in an attractive growing market near the technology center in NC. I consider it a "chicken tech" stock; because it and its market will prosper when tech prospers. I own it and many of my friends own it. I might buy more if I can find some money. The only negative I see is no dividend waiver by the stock still in the mutual. If I am missing some warts on this one, I would like to hear what those warts are.

I am dropping this one to a hold based on concerns about how thrifts will hold up in a rising interest rate environment (whether or not the market reaction is rational). This one has such a good business that I would not sell but I plan to keep what I own and not pay attention to market fluctuation. It is just not the right time to put any money into it. I loved it around $10 and kept buying up to $11.75. At close to $14 ask it is a hold. There is a large spread between bid and ask. If you can pick some up around the current bid of $12.75 it would be a buy but not a strong buy. It is so small and illiquid that you need to buy it really cheap and be committed to holding long term for it to work.
