Boy, I think HCBK is getting tossed into the garbage pile undeservedly. This bank will be gone by sometime in 2009 at an above market multiple. Don't be surprised at a price between $25 and $30 when they go. The Chairman has as much said if someone out there thinks the stock is worth more than HCBK thinks its worth, they would have to sell to satisfy shareholders. They have a remarkable footprint which is very attractive to potential suitors.

In other words, the current price is very attractive for 2 year time horizon.

Somebody say "Golden East?" I say, "Better than Golden West!" Better dividend, better P/BV ratio, better Efficiency Ratio, better growth opportunities, better takeover possibility. Plus, HCBK stock has been a laggard for 2 years. With new stock out there, it qualifies for more institutional portfolios and is likely to be included in more stock indices.

Deese guys are the pen-ultimate penny pinching money makers. Number 1 rating gotz to make it easy to park ya mula here. Got it at the IPO and more.

They are looking all over US to allocate an increasing wad of moola...no 2nd step coming soon...they are very patient at this game

Getting mighty close to that magic 8% ratio...stock has been creeping up...wanting to close in on $40...these fine folks are number-reactive...botta-bing-botta-boom...when it hits $39.50...we have lift off

This bank is a star in northern NJ - they have a very loyal customer base and lead the pack in efficiency.

That being said - the new rumor is that a second step is in the works. I have my doubts, simply because they haven't really put to use the capital raised in their 1999 MHC offering. My guess is that the wad of cash they are sitting on needs to be tapped before any second step.

Right now, I think they are content to wait, increase their dividend every quarter, and continue to be very profitable.

This bank is perhaps the most efficient in the USA. It is certainly going to go to a second step. Hernance told me I'd live to see the day that was two years ago. Although it has gone up considerably, it remains the class in the field.

Q2 2003 Update: Don't make the same mistake I made in 1999....BUY THE STOCK !!!!!!!

End Of Story.

As Elaine said to The Soup Nazi......"NEXT!!!!!!!!"

__________________________________________________________

HCBK has run up alot since 1999, but the bank's size and premier locations make it a must-have core holding in any investor's portfolio. The bank has a super-conservative lending policy and should weather a real estate crunch as well as Superman deflects a bullet.

I would have hoped for more aggressive dividend and/or buyback policies by now (compare HCBK to CFFN), but that might reflect the management's "we'll do it our way" approach.

I would be more aggressive a few points lower but HCBK is fine to buy under $20.

The only negative is that a purchase of the MHC is near-impossible by existing potential bidders and a 2nd-Step will squash more when or if it happens because of the capital raised. HOWEVER, if you get some consolidation in the NYC thrift arena then I can see a super-regional, quasi-national NYC thrift like GPT or AF or NYCB swelling to $50 BB in assets by 2005 and then lurching across the Hudson to get HCBK and all those cheap deposits.

Hudson has one of the best efficiency ratio among any bank, let alone the large ones. It has a stock buy back program, with 10.4 million shares remaining. Given the float of 52 million shares, the buyback amounts to 20%. The equity to asset ratio is down to 8.9% as of the latest quarter. I expect this bank to undergo a second step conversion upon completion of the buyback.

Second step should (hopefully) be coming in 2003, and if (when) it does occur, expect a massive pop higher.
